How to get a Alabama speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Alabama are licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- SLP applicants must have at least a master's degree or equivalent, plus Board-approved supervised clinical practicum and postgraduate professional experience. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants without ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence must pass the ETS Praxis II Speech-Language Pathology exam (or a Board-approved equivalent) at or above the Board's cutoff score, with the score sent to the Board by ETS. [3]
- Fees
- Applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable $200.00 application fee; a $75.00 license fee (prorated for approvals after August) is due on Board approval. [3]
- Where to apply
- Applicants find the licensure application, including the online application link, on the board's Applications and Forms page. [6] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Alabama has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Alabama license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- The Board may grant a license by reciprocity to a holder of ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence or of a current license in another state whose standards meet or exceed Alabama's, on payment of the fee and proof of the out-of-state license. [3]
- Interstate compact
- Alabama is not among the ASLP-IC states issuing compact privileges: the Commission says registration for privileges is open only for practitioners licensed in Louisiana, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. [5]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Clinical Fellows and fourth-year interns must apply for a provisional license within 30 days of beginning employment or an internship, with a $200 application fee and a notarized supervisor statement; the Clinical Fellowship must be completed within a maximum of 36 months. [3]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- All licenses expire on December 31 and must be renewed every year with a $100.00 renewal fee and documentation of 12 clock hours of continuing education submitted before December 31. [4]
- Continuing education
- Licensees must complete at least 12 hours of continuing education each year (January 1 to December 31), at least 10 of them in the area of licensure, one of which should be in ethics, and at most 2 in related areas. [3]
