How to get a Alaska speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Alaska are licensed by the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing, Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist Program. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must hold the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology, or its equivalent, and be at least 18 years old. [2]
- Background check
- Applicants must submit an FD-258 fingerprint card, which the program forwards to the Alaska Department of Public Safety and the FBI for a criminal background check; the fingerprint processing fee is $75. [1]
- Fees
- Applicants pay a $200 nonrefundable application fee, a $70 license fee and a $75 fingerprint processing fee, for total fees due of $345. [1]
- Where to apply
- Applicants apply by submitting the speech-language pathologist license application to the Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist Program, PO Box 110806, Juneau, AK 99811. [1] Open the application →
- Processing time
- The division says processing a paper application varies by program but can take several weeks from the date a complete application with all fees is received. [1]
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
- Licensed in another state
- Speech-language pathologists licensed in another state use the standard license application (with ASHA certification and verification from every jurisdiction where they have been licensed) and may receive a temporary license while it is pending by paying an additional $70 temporary license fee. [1]
- Interstate compact
- Alaska has enacted the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact, which the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development is directed to implement; this source does not say whether privileges are being issued yet. [2]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Alaska issues a temporary speech-language pathologist license to clinical fellows, resident or not, who are completing the supervised clinical year for the ASHA CCC; fees are a $200 nonrefundable application fee and a $70 temporary license fee. [3]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Speech-language pathologist licenses are issued for a two-year period and expire on September 30 of even-numbered years, regardless of the date of issuance. [1]
