How to get a Georgia speech-language pathology license

Speech-language pathologists in Georgia are licensed by the State Board of Examiners of Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and Hearing Aid Dispensing. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.

Step by step

Getting licensed

Education
Applicants must hold a master's or higher degree with a major emphasis in speech-language pathology from an accredited program, with 75 semester hours of academic credit and 375 clock hours of supervised clinical practicum plus 25 hours of observation. [2]

Moving to the state

Already licensed somewhere else?

Georgia has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Georgia license for now.
Licensed in another state
SLPs who hold a license in another jurisdiction or ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence may apply for a Georgia license without examination if they meet Georgia's eligibility requirements; the Board compares the other jurisdiction's licensure law with Georgia's. [2]

Before your full license

New graduates and clinical fellows

Temporary or provisional license
Clinical fellows must obtain Board approval and a Paid Clinical Experience (PCE) provisional license before starting the PCE, which requires at least 36 weeks of full-time employment of at least 30 hours per week; the provisional license is valid for one year. [2]

After you are licensed

Keeping the license active

Renewal
Full SLP licenses expire on March 31 of odd-numbered years, and the renewal application, biennial renewal fee and continuing education documentation are due by that date. [3]
Continuing education
Licensees must earn at least 2.0 CEUs (20 clock hours) of continuing education per two-year licensure period, with no more than 1.0 CEU (10 clock hours) in any 24-hour period. [4]
