How to get a Hawaii speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Hawaii are licensed by the Hawaii Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must graduate from an accredited college or university and be eligible for the ASHA certificate of clinical competence, including three hundred seventy-five hours of supervised clinical observation and practicum and a clinical fellowship of at least thirty-six weeks of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants must pass the Praxis examination in speech-language pathology administered by ETS, with the passing score set by ASHA's Council for Clinical Certification. [2]
- Background check
- The application asks whether the applicant has ever been convicted of a crime that has not been annulled or expunged; applicants with a conviction must submit a signed explanation, court records and affidavits attesting to rehabilitation. [2]
- Fees
- The application fee is $50 and is not refundable; total initial fees are $264 if the license is issued in an even-numbered year or $176 if issued in an odd-numbered year, and a provisional license costs $226. [2]
- Where to apply
- Speech pathologist application forms (by examination, provisional, ASHA certification, temporary services) are posted on the Board's Application Forms and Publications page; an application is abandoned if not completed within one year of filing. [5] Open the application →
- Processing time
- The Board states it takes approximately 15 to 20 business days to process an application for completeness, after which a license may be issued if there are no deficiencies. [4]
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Hawaii is not a member of the ASLP-IC: audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed in another state need a full Hawaii license before starting.
- Licensed in another state
- Hawaii offers no reciprocity for out-of-state licenses; speech pathologists holding the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence may apply for licensure by ASHA certification, with an ASHA verification letter dated within six months sent directly to the Board. [3]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Speech pathologists with at least a master's degree may obtain a provisional license to complete licensure requirements under supervision of a licensed, ASHA-certified speech pathologist; it is valid for one year and may be renewed for one additional one-year period. [2]
