How to get a Louisiana speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Louisiana are licensed by the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants need a master's degree in speech-language pathology and 400 clinical practicum hours if their graduate program began after January 1, 2004. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants for the full SLP license need a passing Praxis score or ASHA certification; exam scores must be sent electronically from ETS using the Board's code 7331. [3]
- Background check
- All applicants must complete a state and federal criminal background check through the Louisiana State Police; LSP fees are up to $62.75, plus a $39.99 convenience fee for out-of-state applicants. [4]
- Fees
- The non-refundable initial Louisiana license application fee is $125. [2]
- Where to apply
- Applicants start online by selecting a license type (such as Speech-Language Pathology or Provisional Speech-Language Pathology) on the Board's application page. [9] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
- Licensed in another state
- Although the Practice Act allows reciprocity, applicants licensed in another state must complete the full application process, including verification of licensure sent directly by every state where they hold or have held a license. [5]
- Interstate compact
- Louisiana is an ASLP-IC member state and is issuing compact privileges; the compact operationalized on October 28, 2025, and registration through CompactConnect is open for practitioners licensed in Louisiana, West Virginia, Ohio, and Tennessee. [8]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Graduates with a master's degree and 400 clinical practicum hours can obtain a Provisional Speech-Language Pathology license; provisional SLPs have one year to submit a passing national exam score, and the full license requires 36 weeks of full-time post-graduate professional employment experience. [3]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- All licenses must be renewed annually by June 30 to avoid delinquent renewal fees; renewal notices are emailed each year on April 15. [6]
- Continuing education
- Licensees must complete at least 10 clock hours of continuing education each license period (July 1 through June 30), with at least five hours directly related to the licensee's scope of practice. [7]
