How to get a Maine speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Maine are licensed by the Maine Board of Speech, Audiology and Hearing. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Speech-language pathologists must hold a master's degree, a doctoral degree or a board-approved equivalent from an accredited institution, consistent with the requirements for ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Pathology. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants under Pathway 1 must submit official documentation of a passing score on the Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology obtained no more than five (5) years before applying; Pathway 2 applicants instead hold a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency. [3]
- Background check
- Applicants for initial licensure or licensure by endorsement must undergo a state and FBI criminal history background check, which includes having fingerprints taken. [4]
- Fees
- The speech-language pathologist licensure fee is $50.00, plus a criminal history record check fee of $21.00. [5]
- Where to apply
- Applicants submit a completed application with supporting documents through the online licensing service linked from the board's licensing page. [5] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Maine has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Maine license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- Speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere may apply under Pathway 3 by submitting proof of current licensure in a jurisdiction whose professional standards the board finds substantially equivalent, plus verification of each license they hold or have held. [3]
- Interstate compact
- The ASLP-IC Commission says compact privilege registration is open only for practitioners licensed in Louisiana, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia, so Maine is not yet issuing ASLP-IC compact privileges. [8]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Applicants who meet all licensure requirements except professional employment or examination may obtain a temporary license to practice under supervision; it is effective for one year, may be renewed once, and costs $50.00 plus a $21.00 criminal history record check fee. [6]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Speech-language pathologist licenses renew annually with a fixed renewal date of February 28th; the annual renewal fee is $50.00, and a $50 late fee is assessed after the expiration date. [5]
- Continuing education
- Speech-language pathologists must complete 10 hours of continuing professional education during each one-year license term, and activities must directly relate to the practice of speech-language pathology. [7]
