Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
- Licensed in another state
- For an applicant with a current, non-expired license in another state, the Board may waive certain qualifications if that state's requirements are the same as or higher than Maryland's. [2]
- Interstate compact
- The ASLP-IC commission lists Maryland as not yet accepting compact privilege applications (current as of May 28, 2026), with a $100 Maryland state fee and a $50 compact fee listed. [7]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Clinical fellows need a Maryland limited license, approved by the Board before the supervised practice begins; it is valid for one year and renewable if necessary. [2]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Licenses are renewed every 2 years, on or before May 31 of the year in which the license expires; the biennial renewal fee is $250. [6]
- Continuing education
- Speech-language pathologists must earn 30 continuing education units every 2 years, including at least 20 in the area of licensure with at least 1 each in cultural competency and ethics. [6]
