How to get a Michigan speech-language pathology license

Speech-language pathologists in Michigan are licensed by the Michigan Board of Speech-Language Pathology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.

Step by step

Getting licensed

Education
Applicants must have a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited educational program and complete a supervised postgraduate clinical experience; a current ASHA CCC-SLP is presumed to satisfy the education, clinical experience and exam requirements. [2]
National exam
Applicants must pass the Praxis Series II exam in Speech-Language Pathology and have ETS send the score to the Michigan Board (recipient code 7430). [3]
Required courses
Before an initial license is issued, applicants must complete 2 hours of implicit bias training within the 5 years before issuance, plus a one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking. [3]
Background check
All applicants must complete a criminal background check; instructions are emailed in an Application Confirmation letter after the application is submitted. [3]
Fees
The application fee plus 2-year license fee for a speech-language pathologist license by exam or endorsement is $187.40, payable by credit or debit card. [3]
Where to apply
Applicants apply or renew online through the Apply / Renew Online link on the Michigan Board of Speech-Language Pathology page, which leads to MiPLUS. [1] Open the application →

Moving to the state

Already licensed somewhere else?

Michigan is not a member of the ASLP-IC: audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed in another state need a full Michigan license before starting.
Licensed in another state
Applicants by endorsement must hold a current, full speech-language pathologist license in another state or Canadian province and provide license verification, plus either current ASHA certification or official master's or doctoral transcripts with a passing Praxis or Canadian entry-to-practice exam score. [3]
Interstate compact
Michigan has not enacted the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact; House Bill 4509 of 2025, which would provide for the compact, passed the House and was referred to the Senate Committee on Health Policy. No compact privileges are issued in Michigan. [5]

Before your full license

New graduates and clinical fellows

Temporary or provisional license
Michigan issues a speech-language pathologist educational limited temporary license that allows practice under the supervision of a fully licensed SLP while gaining the 9 months (1,260 hours) of post-graduate clinical experience required for full licensure. The fee is $187.40 and the license is valid for 2 years from issuance. [4]

After you are licensed

Keeping the license active

Renewal
Speech-language pathologist licenses are valid for 2 years and renew every 2 years online through MiPLUS, starting 90 days before expiration; the renewal fee is $165.40. [3]
Continuing education
Speech-language pathologists must earn 20 continuous professional development (CPD) credits per 2-year renewal cycle, including at least 1 credit in pain and symptom management, and only 15 CPD credits may be completed through ASHA. Renewal also requires 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of the license cycle and a one-time human trafficking training. [3]
