How to get a Montana speech-language pathology license

Speech-language pathologists in Montana are licensed by the Montana Board of Physical, Rehabilitative, and Developmental Health Care Professionals. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.

Step by step

Getting licensed

Education
Applicants must hold at least a master's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders from a program accredited by ASHA's Council on Academic Accreditation (or equivalent), complete a supervised clinical practicum, and complete a 36-week supervised professional experience after graduation. [2]
National exam
Applicants must pass the national Praxis examination in speech-language pathology or its equivalent. [2]
Fees
The original application fee for a speech-language pathologist license is $150. [3]
Where to apply
Applications are submitted online through the Montana Department of Labor & Industry licensing portal linked from the board's website. [1] Open the application →

Moving to the state

Already licensed somewhere else?

Montana has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Montana license for now.
Licensed in another state
Applicants licensed in a state on the board's substantial equivalency list are treated as routine applications as to education, examination, and experience requirements, though applications may be nonroutine on other grounds. [4]
Interstate compact
Montana is a member of the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC), but compact privileges are not yet available for speech-language pathology because the FBI has not authorized Montana to run fingerprint background checks for this license type. [8]

Before your full license

New graduates and clinical fellows

Temporary or provisional license
Graduates complete their supervised professional experience under a limited license, which requires a qualifying master's degree, a supervised clinical practicum, a passing Praxis score and a professional experience supervisor; it expires two years from issue and is not renewable. [5]

After you are licensed

Keeping the license active

Renewal
Speech-language pathologist licenses must be renewed annually by February 1; the renewal period opens 60 days before the renewal date. [6]
Continuing education
Speech-language pathologists must complete 10 hours of continuing education annually (15 hours for dual speech-language pathologist and audiologist licensees). [7]
