How to get a Nebraska speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Nebraska are licensed by the Nebraska Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must hold a master's degree or its equivalent in speech-language pathology from an approved academic program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) or a board-approved equivalent. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants by education must pass the Praxis licensure examination in speech-language pathology and select the Nebraska Board of Examiners (SLP/AUD 7646) as a score recipient. [2]
- Background check
- Applicants must submit fingerprints for a criminal background check through the Nebraska State Patrol; the application lists a $75 fee. [2]
- Fees
- The initial license fee is $140, or $35 if the license is issued within 180 days of the expiration date (June 1 to November 30 of even years), unless a fee waiver applies. [2]
- Where to apply
- Applicants use the Audiology/Speech Language Pathology Initial Application linked on the DHHS Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology page. [1] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Nebraska has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Nebraska license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- Applicants holding ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence may apply by endorsement without transcripts or clinical fellowship documentation; applicants licensed in another state may apply by reciprocity with license verification from each state. [2]
- Interstate compact
- Nebraska has adopted the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC) in statute, Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-4101. [4]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- A temporary license may be granted to a person who meets all requirements except the required professional experience (the clinical fellowship); it is valid until the experience is completed or eighteen months, whichever is sooner, and cannot be renewed. [3]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Speech-language pathologist licenses expire December 1 of each even-numbered year, and the Licensure Unit mails a renewal notice at least 30 days before expiration. [1]
- Continuing education
- Speech-language pathologists must complete at least 20 hours of approved continuing education during the 24-month period before December 1 of each even-numbered year. [1]
