How to get a New Jersey speech-language pathology license

Speech-language pathologists in New Jersey are licensed by the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Committee. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.

Step by step

Getting licensed

Education
Applicants must hold a master's degree, or a bachelor's degree plus 42 post-baccalaureate semester hours, in speech-language pathology or audiology, and must have completed 75 hours of academic credit and 350 hours of supervised clinical experience. [2]
National exam
Applicants must show evidence of passing the Praxis Examination administered by the Educational Testing Service; an original or notarized copy of the Certificate of Clinical Competence is accepted in lieu of the score. [2]
State law exam
All new applicants, applicants licensed in other states, temporary license applicants and licensees renewing or reinstating must complete an online Jurisprudence Orientation. [2]
Background check
Applicants must complete a Certification and Authorization Form for a criminal history background check and then receive instructions for scheduling digital fingerprinting. [3]
Fees
Applicants pay a nonrefundable $75.00 application fee plus a $170.00 initial license fee, for a total of $245.00. [2]
Where to apply
Applicants apply through the Committee's online Speech-Language Pathology License Application, linked from its Applications and Forms page. [7] Open the application →
Processing time
The Committee lists current timeframes of under 1 week for initial review (Phase I), 2-4 weeks for the background check and deficiencies (Phase II), and under 1 week to approval (Phase III). [6]

Moving to the state

Already licensed somewhere else?

New Jersey is not a member of the ASLP-IC: audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed in another state need a full New Jersey license before starting.
Licensed in another state
A separate application exists for persons licensed in another state; applicants who have not held a current license for at least 5 years must use the regular license application instead, and must have other states send proof of licensure directly to the Committee. [4]

Before your full license

New graduates and clinical fellows

Temporary or provisional license
A temporary license is issued for completing the clinical internship under an approved supervision plan, lasting 9 months full-time or up to 18 months part-time; it ends when the internship is complete and cannot be renewed. The application and temporary license fees total $125.00. [5]

After you are licensed

Keeping the license active

Renewal
Licenses are valid for 2 years and every speech-language pathologist license expires in October of odd-numbered years; renewal is online with a fee of $170. [3]
Continuing education
Licensees must complete 20 credits of continuing education during each biennial licensure period, of which 10 may be self-study; licensees on their first renewal may need fewer. [3]
