How to get a North Dakota speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in North Dakota are licensed by the North Dakota State Board of Examiners on Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must hold a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an educational institution recognized by the board, and must have official graduate and undergraduate transcripts sent directly to the board. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants must provide proof of a passing Praxis score; applicants without that documentation may upload proof of current ASHA certification instead. [3]
- Fees
- Applicants pay a $100.00 application fee; the board's fee schedule also lists a $250.00 re-licensing fee. [3]
- Where to apply
- Applicants apply through the board's online application, linked from the New Application Instructions page. [3] Open the application →
- Processing time
- The board states that review of applications is usually completed within 7-10 business days; incomplete applications take longer. [7]
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
- Licensed in another state
- The board may license an applicant who holds a current license in good standing in another state if that state imposes at least substantially the same standards as North Dakota. [4]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- The board may grant a temporary license, for a maximum of six months, to an applicant who holds a current license in good standing in another state or has held one within the past five years. [4]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Licenses renew annually and expire each year on December 31st; the annual renewal fee is $75.00, and renewals received after December 31st are subject to a late fee. [5]
- Continuing education
- Licensees must complete at least ten (10) clock hours of approved continuing education each year; courses must be preapproved by the board unless they are approved by ASHA, AAA or IHS. [6]
