How to get a South Carolina speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in South Carolina are licensed by the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must have earned a post-graduate degree in speech-language pathology from a school or program the board finds equivalent to ASHA-accredited programs. [2]
- Fees
- The initial license application fee is $200 for a speech-language pathologist and $100 for a speech-language pathologist intern. [3]
- Where to apply
- First-time applicants can apply through the board's electronic application system, which accepts document uploads and card or electronic check payment. [9] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
- Licensed in another state
- The board may license a speech-language pathologist who holds a current license in another state with substantially equivalent standards, subject to any other requirements the board sets, such as continuing education. [4]
- Interstate compact
- The ASLP-IC commission lists compact privilege registration as open only in Louisiana, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia, so South Carolina is not yet issuing ASLP-IC privileges. [8]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- A Speech-Language Pathologist Intern License is issued to graduates who still need to pass the exam and/or complete Supervised Professional Employment of at least 30 hours per week for nine months, totaling not less than 1,260 hours under a licensed SLP. [5]
