How to get a Utah speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Utah are licensed by the Speech-language Pathologist and Audiologist Licensing Board. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants without a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence must verify at least a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited university or college and complete one academic year of supervised professional experience. [1]
- National exam
- Applicants must hold current ASHA certification or document a passing score on the Praxis exam for speech-language pathology. [2]
- Where to apply
- Applicants apply online or with a paper application through the Utah Division of Professional Licensing speech-language pathologist license page. [6] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Utah has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Utah license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- Speech-language pathologists licensed in a jurisdiction Utah deems equivalent may apply by endorsement if they have held that license for at least one year and it is active and in good standing. [3]
- Interstate compact
- Utah has enacted the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC), which reached its activation threshold as of October 2021. [5]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- A temporary speech-language pathology license may be issued to an applicant practicing a year of clinical fellowship; it is valid for up to 12 months from the day after issuance. [1]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Speech-language pathologist licenses expire on May 31 of odd-numbered years, and DOPL mails a renewal notice at least 60 days before expiration. [4]
- Continuing education
- At renewal, licensees must show either 20 hours of division-approved continuing education in the preceding renewal cycle or an active national certification that requires at least 20 hours of continuing education per cycle. [1]
