How to get a Vermont speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Vermont are licensed by the Vermont Secretary of State, Office of Professional Regulation. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in speech-language pathology from a Director-approved institution, complete a supervised clinical practicum, and complete a period of postgraduate professional training. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants must pass an examination in speech-language pathology approved by the Director. [2]
- Fees
- The general application fee for licensure is $115; speech-language pathologists are not among the listed exceptions. [3]
- Where to apply
- Applications are submitted online through the OPR Online Services System, linked from the speech-language pathologist forms and instructions page. [6] Open the application →
- Processing time
- OPR asks applicants to allow 3 to 5 business days for application processing. [4]
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Vermont has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Vermont license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- Applicants licensed in another jurisdiction with substantially equivalent requirements may apply by endorsement with license verification and proof of ASHA certification; those actively licensed in good standing for three or more years qualify for Fast Track Endorsement. [4]
- Interstate compact
- Vermont has joined the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC), but it is not yet active in Vermont; until it is, a person holding a compact license in another state must also hold a Vermont license. [6]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Applicants otherwise qualified whose only outstanding item is verification of licensure may request a 90-day provisional license; a separate Provisional Trainee registration covers applicants obtaining their supervised clinical practicum experience. [4]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Renewal applications open six weeks before the license expiration date, are submitted through the Online Services System, and must be completed before the license expires. [5]
- Continuing education
- At renewal, licensees must show proof of 20 hours of continuing education or proof of an active ASHA CCC-SLP. [5]
