How to get a Virginia speech-language pathology license

Speech-language pathologists in Virginia are licensed by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.

Step by step

Getting licensed

Education
Applicants who do not hold a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence must document graduation from a program accredited by ASHA's Council on Academic Accreditation or an equivalent accrediting body recognized by the board. [2]
National exam
Applicants have their Praxis scores released to the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology using Board code 9347. [3]
Fees
The application fee for a speech-language pathologist license is $135 and is nonrefundable. [3]
Where to apply
SLP applications (provisional, initial full, and provisional-to-full) are accepted online only, starting from the board's Speech-Language Pathologist application wizard. [9] Open the application →
Processing time
The Board asks applicants to allow 21 business days from initial mailing for staff to receive and process an application. [3]

Moving to the state

Already licensed somewhere else?

Virginia has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Virginia license for now.
Licensed in another state
An SLP licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction may apply for Virginia licensure with documentation of current, active, unrestricted licensure there plus either one year of active practice over the past three years or six months of practice under a Virginia provisional license with a supervisor's recommendation. [4]
Interstate compact
Virginia has enacted the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC), 2023, chapter 337. [8]

Before your full license

New graduates and clinical fellows

Temporary or provisional license
Virginia issues provisional SLP licenses, including to graduates who have passed the qualifying exam and need clinical experience for initial licensure; provisional licenses expire 24 months after issuance and may be renewed for an additional 12 months. [5]

After you are licensed

Keeping the license active

Renewal
SLP licenses are renewed annually, no later than June 30 of each year. [6]
Continuing education
SLPs must complete at least 10 hours of continuing education before the renewal date each year; one of the 10 hours may be earned through uncompensated services to low-income individuals at a local health department or free clinic. [7]
