How to get a Wisconsin speech-language pathology license

Speech-language pathologists in Wisconsin are licensed by the Wisconsin Hearing and Speech Examining Board. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.

Step by step

Getting licensed

Education
Applicants must have completed a supervised clinical practicum and received a master's degree in speech-language pathology from a board-approved college or university, or substantially equivalent education or training. [2]
National exam
Applicants must pass the Praxis exam, with official scores sent to DSPS directly by the testing company; scores submitted by applicants are not accepted. [3]
Background check
Applicants must provide evidence satisfactory to the board that they do not have a conviction record. [2]
Fees
The initial license fee for a speech-language pathologist is $75, and the renewal fee is $75. [4]
Where to apply
Applications are submitted online through the DSPS LicensE portal (license.wi.gov). [3] Open the application →
Processing time
DSPS states that application materials are reviewed within approximately 10 days by a member of the credentialing team, though some licenses take longer due to complexity. [3]

Moving to the state

Already licensed somewhere else?

Wisconsin has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Wisconsin license for now.
Licensed in another state
Applicants holding at least one full, active speech-language pathologist license in another state may apply by reciprocity, with license verifications sent directly from every jurisdiction where they hold or held a license. [5]
Interstate compact
Wisconsin rules provide for compact privileges for speech-language pathologists under the interstate compact; applicants must hold an unencumbered home state license in another compact state, complete the compact application process and pay the required fee. [9]

Before your full license

New graduates and clinical fellows

Temporary or provisional license
Applicants must obtain a temporary license before beginning a postgraduate clinical fellowship, practicing under a licensed or compact-privilege-holding SLP; it is valid for 18 months and may be renewed once by the board. [6]

After you are licensed

Keeping the license active

Renewal
Speech-language pathologist licenses must be renewed by January 31 of each odd-numbered year, even if the license was issued in the months just before that date. [7]
Continuing education
Speech-language pathologists must complete at least 20 hours of board-approved continuing education in each biennial renewal period, including at least 2 hours relating to ethics; new licensees need not report CE until their second renewal. [8]
