How to get a Delaware occupational therapy license
Occupational therapists in Delaware are licensed by the Board of Occupational Therapy Practice. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Examination applicants must have an official transcript sent directly from a school accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), and the transcript should show fieldwork experience. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants must achieve the passing score on the written standardized examination developed by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). [3]
- Background check
- Applicants must complete a new State of Delaware and FBI fingerprint-based criminal background check; checks completed for any other purpose, such as employment or licensure in other states, are not accepted. [2]
- Fees
- The Occupational Therapist license application fee is $236. [4]
- Where to apply
- Applications are submitted online through DELPROS (Delaware Professional Regulation Online Services), which requires a DELPROS user account. [2] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Delaware has enacted the OT Compact but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants licensed elsewhere still need a Delaware license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- Occupational therapists who already hold a current OT license in another jurisdiction apply by reciprocity and must have licensure verification sent from each state or jurisdiction where they hold or have held a license. [2]
- Interstate compact
- Delaware has enacted the Interstate Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact in state law. [7]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Occupational therapy licenses must be renewed in DELPROS every two years and expire on July 31 of even-numbered years. [5]
- Continuing education
- Occupational therapists must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education during each full renewal period (August 1 to July 31 of even-numbered years); the first renewal is prorated. [6]
