How to get a Delaware speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Delaware are licensed by the Board of Speech Pathologists, Audiologists, and Hearing Aid Dispensers. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants for the temporary (clinical fellowship) license must have a transcript showing at least a master's degree or its equivalent with a major emphasis in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, or speech-language and hearing science, plus at least 400 clock hours of supervised clinical practicum. [2]
- National exam
- Speech-language pathologists must pass the national examination; temporary licensees are expected to complete the Clinical Fellowship and pass the national examination during the one-year temporary license. [2]
- Background check
- Applicants must complete a new State of Delaware and FBI fingerprint-based criminal background check; checks completed for any other purpose, such as employment or licensure in other states, are not accepted. [3]
- Fees
- The Speech/Language Pathologist license application fee is $175, and the temporary license application fee is $65. [4]
- Where to apply
- Applications are submitted online through DELPROS (Delaware Professional Regulation Online Services), which requires a DELPROS user account. [3] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
- Licensed in another state
- SLPs holding current ASHA CCC-SLP certification apply by certification even if licensed elsewhere; those with an active license in another jurisdiction who lack the CCC but completed a clinical fellowship apply by reciprocity. [3]
- Interstate compact
- Delaware has enacted the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact in state law. [7]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Graduates who must complete the ASHA Clinical Fellowship need a temporary license, valid one year and extendable up to 3 times for a maximum of 48 months, with Board approval. [2]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Speech/Language Pathologist licenses must be renewed in DELPROS every two years and expire on July 31 of odd-numbered years. [5]
- Continuing education
- Speech-language pathologists must complete 30 hours of approved continuing education during each full renewal period; the first renewal is prorated. [6]
