How to get a Indiana speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Indiana are licensed by the Indiana Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants by examination must hold a master's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution, document 400 hours of direct supervised clinical experience, and complete a clinical fellowship of at least 9 consecutive months full-time or equivalent. [1]
- National exam
- Applicants must have ETS send an official Praxis score report verifying a passing score directly to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency; a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence may substitute for the score report. [1]
- State law exam
- All SLP applicants, including those applying by reciprocity, must pass a written Indiana jurisprudence examination covering the state statute, Title 880 rules and Health Professions Standards of Practice; the passing score is 75%. [1]
- Background check
- Applicants for an initial license must submit to a national fingerprint-based criminal history background check at their own cost (listed as $38.20), after the license application has been submitted; speech pathologists are among the license types that require it. [2]
- Fees
- The speech-language pathologist application fee (by examination or by reciprocity) is $150.00, paid by credit or debit card and nonrefundable. [1]
- Where to apply
- Applications are submitted online through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency's online licensing services, linked from the board's licensing information page. [1] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Indiana has enacted the ASLP-IC but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so audiologists and speech-language pathologists licensed elsewhere still need a Indiana license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- SLPs licensed in another state may apply by reciprocity with the $150.00 fee, a criminal background check, an official license verification sent directly from the other licensing authority, and a passing score on the Indiana jurisprudence examination. [1]
- Interstate compact
- The ASLP-IC Commission's state fee table (current as of May 28, 2026) lists Indiana as not yet accepting ASLP compact privilege applications; it shows an Indiana jurisprudence requirement, a $50 state fee and a $50 compact fee. [3]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Clinical fellows must register for a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) with a $50.00 application fee and a supervisor holding a current Indiana SLP or audiologist license; the fellowship is 9 months full-time or equivalent and may not exceed 18 consecutive months. [1]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- SLP licenses renew on a two-year cycle and expire December 31 of odd-numbered years; the renewal fee is $100.00. [1]
- Continuing education
- SLPs must complete 36 hours of continuing education each two-year renewal cycle, with no more than 6 hours through self-study; hours cannot be carried over, and in-service and competency CEs do not count. [1]
