How to get a Oklahoma occupational therapy license
Occupational therapists in Oklahoma are licensed by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Occupational therapist applicants must complete an educational program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) and at least six months of supervised fieldwork experience. [2]
- National exam
- The Board recognizes the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) examination for licensure, and applicants must have passing scores submitted through a Board-approved reporting service. [3]
- Background check
- The Board's occupational therapist forms list includes an Extended Background Check (EBC) consent to perform a criminal history background check. [1]
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Oklahoma has enacted the OT Compact but is not yet issuing compact privileges, so occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants licensed elsewhere still need a Oklahoma license for now.
- Licensed in another state
- Occupational therapists currently licensed by examination in another U.S. state, the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico are eligible for licensure by endorsement if their exam was the NBCOT exam or another Board-approved exam, with proof of passing required. [3]
- Interstate compact
- Oklahoma enacted the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact through Senate Bill 1653, effective November 1, 2026. [4]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- The Board may issue a temporary license for no more than 90 days to an endorsement applicant once it receives the application and a completed Verification of Supervision form; new graduates who meet the academic and clinical requirements may practice under direct on-site supervision in graduate status for up to one year. [3]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Occupational therapist licenses must be renewed yearly on October 31, with fees set by the Board and late fees for late renewal. [3]
- Continuing education
- Occupational therapists must complete 20 hours of approved continuing education every two years, with the cycle ending October 31 of every even year; no hours may be carried over. [1]
