How to get a Oklahoma speech-language pathology license
Speech-language pathologists in Oklahoma are licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Speech-language pathology applicants must hold at least a master's degree or equivalent with a major emphasis in speech-language pathology from an accredited institution, and must complete at least 36 weeks of full-time paid clinical fellowship (waived for holders of the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence). [2]
- National exam
- Applicants must pass the ETS Praxis II Speech-Language Pathology exam (or another Board-recognized national exam) within two years after Board approval of their first clinical fellow application; the exam is waived for ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence holders. [2]
- Background check
- A national criminal background check is completed on each applicant. [2]
- Fees
- The application fee is $85, which is forfeited if the applicant is not found eligible for licensure. [2]
- Where to apply
- Applicants apply online through the OBESPA Online Licensing system linked from the board's New Applicants page. [4] Open the application →
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
- Licensed in another state
- The Board may license without examination a person holding a current speech-language pathology license in another state or country whose qualifications and exams meet or exceed Oklahoma's, upon payment of the licensure fee and proof of licensure in good standing. [2]
- Interstate compact
- Oklahoma is a member of the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC); practitioners seeking privileges to practice in Oklahoma must apply through ASLP-IC and pay the compact fee plus the $85 Oklahoma application fee. [2]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- Persons completing the supervised clinical fellowship must hold a clinical fellow license and practice under a licensed speech-language pathologist's supervision; the clinical fellow license is valid for one calendar year from Board approval and may be extended once for one year on written request. [2]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Licenses are renewed each calendar year; the $85 renewal fee is due on or before December 31, and renewals postmarked after December 31 incur increasing late penalties. [2]
- Continuing education
- Speech-language pathologists must complete at least 20 clock hours of acceptable continuing education every two years, including at least three clock hours of professional ethics; the period begins in January of every odd-numbered year. [3]
