How to get a Oklahoma physical therapy license
Physical therapists in Oklahoma are licensed by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must have graduated from a physical therapy school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) or an approved successor organization. [2]
- National exam
- Applicants must pass the nationally accepted standardized physical therapy examination, with the passing point set at a scaled score of 600 on a scale of 200 to 800. [2]
- Background check
- The Board may require physical therapist applicants, as a condition of initial licensure, to submit a full set of fingerprints, and it is authorized to obtain state and national criminal history record information. [3]
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Oklahoma is a PT Compact member and is issuing compact privileges: physical therapists and physical therapist assistants licensed in another member state can obtain a privilege to practice in Oklahoma without applying for a new state license.
- Licensed in another state
- Physical therapists currently licensed by examination in another U.S. state, the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico are eligible for licensure by endorsement if their exam and grade standard are acceptable to the Board; national exam scores must be submitted through the Interstate Reporting Service and meet the Oklahoma passing score. [2]
- Interstate compact
- Oklahoma is a Physical Therapy Compact state; physical therapists and PTAs whose home state is also a member may apply through the compact for privileges to practice in Oklahoma. [1]
Before your full license
New graduates and clinical fellows
- Temporary or provisional license
- The Board may issue a temporary permit to a first-time applicant who has applied for a license and is eligible to take the examination; the permit expires upon notice that the applicant has or has not passed the examination. [3]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- Physical therapist licenses expire on January 31 of each year and may be renewed during January upon application, evidence of completed continuing education, and payment of fees. [3]
- Continuing education
- Physical therapists must complete 40 hours of approved continuing education every two years, with the cycle ending January 31 of every even year; at least half must be professional development coursework and three hours must be ethics education covering the APTA Guide for Professional Conduct and APTA Code of Ethics.
