How to get a Wyoming physical therapy license
Physical therapists in Wyoming are licensed by the Wyoming Board of Physical Therapy. Below is what the board requires, from education to renewal, with every requirement linked to the board page it comes from. Checked October 22, 2026.
Step by step
Getting licensed
- Education
- Applicants must have official transcripts sent directly from the registrar showing graduation from a physical therapy program accredited by CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education). [2]
- National exam
- Applicants must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE), administered through FSBPT; the Board makes applicants eligible to test once a complete application and documentation are received. [2]
- State law exam
- All applicants must pass Wyoming's open-book jurisprudence exam, which must be completed and submitted with the application. [3]
- Background check
- Under Wyoming Statute 7-19-201(a)(xv), all PT applicants must submit fingerprint cards for a state and national criminal history check; background checks can take up to 6 weeks. [3]
- Fees
- The PT application fee is $289, which is the $250 licensure fee plus the $39 background check fee, payable to the State of Wyoming by money order or cashier's check and non-refundable. [3]
- Where to apply
- PT and PTA applications by examination and by endorsement are posted on the board's Forms page; the board emails applicants to confirm receipt and list any missing information. [7] Open the application →
- Processing time
- Background check reports can take 4-6 weeks; once the file is complete and the background report is received, application processing takes approximately 7-10 additional business days. [7]
Moving to the state
Already licensed somewhere else?
Wyoming is not a member of the PT Compact: physical therapists and physical therapist assistants licensed in another state need a full Wyoming license before starting.
- Licensed in another state
- PTs who have passed the NPTE and hold a current license in another jurisdiction may apply by endorsement; they need verification from every jurisdiction where they have been licensed and evidence of 15 hours of continuing competence credits within the last year. [3]
- Interstate compact
- Wyoming is listed as a non-member of the PT Compact, so compact privileges cannot be used to practice in Wyoming and Wyoming does not issue them. [6]
After you are licensed
Keeping the license active
- Renewal
- PT licenses expire on October 1 of the year following issuance and are renewed by submitting a timely application, the required fee, and verification of continuing competence. [4]
- Continuing education
- PTs must complete 30 continuing competency units for the cycle (October 2, 2024 to October 1, 2026 for the 2026 renewal), at least 15 of them Category A, and must also submit a passing jurisprudence exam. [5]
